Chapter 1 of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita contains 47 stanzas and is termed ' अर्जुनविषादयोग ', revealing the despondency of Arjuna at seeing all his family members and friends about to engage in a major battle in which most were likely to perish.

Some stanzas of this chapter need to be joined partially with an adjacent stanza to complete the thought expressed. This was done manually in order to avoid incomplete sentence fragments in both stanzas.

We also needed a symbol to represent pauses, long pauses, and a full-stop in the text. These provide signalling value for the sandhi-splitter as well as the parser. It was decided to insert a ',' to represent a pause, and a '.' to represent a full-stop or a long pause. For e.g., in Stanza 1.1, a punctuation symbol was inserted at the end of each line as shown below:

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच .

धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः ,

मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय .
