In the following table we present all the major Paninian sandhi sutras that are applicable to the stanzas in this chapter of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita. The workings of some Paninian sandhi sutras are somewhat difficult to visualize. Hence we have tried to illustrate the operations of these sutras, to show the student real examples in Sanskrit of the application of each sutra to one or more stanzas from Chapter 1. We will present the remaining sandhi sutras after processing the remaining 17 chapters, as most of the Paninian sandhi sutras are likely to be encountered in the remaining chapters.
Illustrations of each sutra can be seen by clicking a sutra link below, which will take one to a page where all the affected stanzas from Chapter 1 will be listed, along with other associated sutras in each chain of rules, and illustrations of how each chain works on an input. Alternatively, one could click on a stanza link below and see all the sandhi rules applicable to that particular stanza (for Chapter 1).
Note: Sandhi sutras are individually classified as vowel sandhi (svar sandhi), consonant sandhi (hal sandhi), and visarga sandhi based on the local context in which they are applicable. However, it will be seen from the examples that several sandhi sutras usually operate as a part of a longer chain (that may contain sutras from other classes, as well as some sutras that have broader applicability).
The following major sandhi rules were found in Chapter 1:
NOTE: The relevant context alone is shown for each example, hence some words are only partially shown above.
Some of the other rules that are included in rule chains include:
