Class 7

Class 7 is known as रुधादि in the Ashtadhyayi. The exemplar verb root is 'rudh:to obstruct'.

Step 0: Drop a pre-existing nasal if present (for e.g., see 'hiNs' below).
Step 1: The verbal base is formed by inserting 'na' between the radical vowel and the termination in Strong forms and 'n' in Weak forms.

Special rules apply in some cases such as 'tRuh:to kill'.

Examples of the derivation of the Third Person-Singular and Plural Present Verb conjugations are shown in the following table:

Verb Root Step 1: insert 'na' (Strong)/ 'n' (Weak) Verbal Base (Strong/ Weak) III-Singular Present III-Plural Present
rudh (to obstruct:Par.) ruNNadh / rundh ruNNadh / rundh ruNNaddhi rundhanti
yuj (to join:Par.) yunaj / yuNj yunaj / yuNj yunakti yuNjanti
hiNs (to kill:Par.) hinas / hiNs hinas / hiNs hinasti hiNsanti
tRuh (to kill:Par.) tRuNNeh ** / tRuNh tRuNNeh / tRuNh tRuNNeDhi tRuNhanti

Derivation:

  • The {3.1.78:rudhAdibhyaHa shnam} sutra attaches the 'shnam' augment, to form the verbal base, overriding the {3.1.68: kartari shap} sutra.
