Class 10

Class 10 is known as चुरादि in the Ashtadhyayi. The exemplar verb root is 'chur:to steal'.

Step 1: Strengthen the radical vowel. Apply 'guNNa' to the short medial vowel, or 'vRuddhi' to the final vowel.
Step 2: Affix 'aya', resulting in the verbal base.

Examples of the derivation of the Third Person-Singular and Plural Present Verb conjugations are shown in the following table:

Verb Root Step 1: apply guNNa / vRuddhi Step 2: attach 'aya' Verbal Base III-Singular Present III-Plural Present
chur (to steal:Par.) chor choraya choraya chorayati chorayanti
dhUp (to heat:Par.) dhUp dhUpA dhUpAya dhUpAyati dhUpAyanti
guh (to hide:Par.) gUh gUha gUhaya gUhayati gUhayanti
dhRu (to owe:Par.) dhAr dhAraya dhAraya dhArayati dhArayanti

Derivation:

  • The {3.1.25:satyApapAsharUpavINNAtUlashlokasenAlomatvachavarmavarNNachUrNNachurAdibhyo NNich} sutra attaches the 'NNich' affix immediately after the verb root, and this word is thereafter considered the verb root. Hence, this process is sometimes called 'NNich shap' because the 'shap' augment is attached as in the usual derivation once the verb root is changed by the attachment of 'NNich'.
