Class 9

Class 9 is known as क्रयादि in the Ashtadhyayi. The exemplar verb root is 'krI:to buy'.

In Strong forms, affix 'nA' to form the verbal base. In Weak forms, if the termination starts with a consonant, affix 'nI', otherwise affix 'n' to form the verbal base. Drop pre-existing nasal if present (for e.g., see 'stambh' below).

Examples of the derivation of the Third Person-Singular, Dual, and Plural Present Verb conjugations are shown in the following table:

Verb Root Step 1: affix 'nA' (Strong)/ 'nI' (Weak+consonant)/ 'n' (Weak+vowel) Verbal Base (Strong/ Weak+consonant/ Weak+vowel) III-Singular Present III-Dual Present III-Plural Present
krI (to buy:Par.) krINNA/ krINNI/ krINN krINNA/ krINNI/ krINN krINNAti krINNItas krINNanti
stambh (to obstruct:Par.) stabhnA/ stabhnI/ stabhn stabhnA/ stabhnI/ stabhn stabhnAti stabhnItas stabhnanti

Derivation:

  • The {3.1.81:kryAdibhyaHa shnA} sutra attaches the 'shnA' augment, to form the verbal base, overriding the {3.1.68: kartari shap} sutra.
