Class 8

Class 8 is known as तनादि in the Ashtadhyayi. The exemplar verb root is 'tan:to stretch'.

The verbal base is formed by affixing 'o' to the verb root in Strong forms and 'u' in Weak forms.

The verb root 'kRu' is an irregular verb.

Examples of the derivation of the Third Person-Singular and Plural Present Verb conjugations are shown in the following table:

Verb Root Step 1: affix 'no' (Strong)/ 'nu' (Weak) Verbal Base (Strong/ Weak) III-Singular Present III-Plural Present
tan (to stretch:Par.) tano / tanu tano / tanu tanoti tanvanti
kRu (to do:Par.) karo / kuru karo / kuru karoti kurvanti

Derivation:

  • The {3.1.79:tanAdikRNbhya uHa} sutra attaches the 'u' augment, to form the verbal base, overriding the {3.1.68: kartari shap} sutra.
