Class 5

Class 5 is known as स्वादि in the Ashtadhyayi. The exemplar verb root is 'su:to extract/ distill'.

Step 1: The verbal base is formed by affixing 'no' to verb root in Strong forms and 'nu' in Weak forms. If the verb root ends with a consonant and the weak termination starts with a vowel, affix 'nuv'.

Examples of the derivation of the Third Person-Singular and Plural Present Verb conjugations are shown in the following table:

Verb Root Step 1: affix 'no' (Strong)/ 'nu' (Weak) Verbal Base (Strong/ Weak) III-Singular Present III-Plural Present
su (to distill:Par.) suno / sunu suno / sunu sunoti sunvanti
ash (to pervade:Atm.) ashnu/ ashnu ashnu/ ashnu ashnute ashnuvate

Derivation:

  • The {3.1.73:svAdibhyaHa shnuHa} sutra attaches the 'shnu' augment, to form the verbal base, overriding the {3.1.68: kartari shap} sutra.
