COMMENTS:

  • The internal structure of clause A.1 requires considerable reordering of terms. An appositional structure may seem appropriate given the Accusative Case of key terms (i.e. 'whom' vs. 'the wise man, unaffected by sorrow and happiness'). This is the structure seen in [MM2015][1] as well as the parser output below.
  • This appositional structure leads to the reading 'These [i.e. cold, heat, pleasure, and pain] do not afflict whom, the wise man, unaffected by sorrow and happiness, he is fit for immortality'.
  • The determination of the internal structure of this complex clause, and necessary reordering of terms, is well beyond the capabilities of a syntactic parser, and is best left to human experts.
