COMMENTS:

  • The parser inserts an elided copula verb ('as:2:P:to be') in clause A.2. The reasoning of the parser can be ascertained by following the 'Link_' comments in the entries shown. The passive past participle 'upapannam:[which has] happened' is treated as an impersonal construction (i.e. '[It] happened by chance ...'.
  • A simple reading of the two-clause structure created by the parser is: 'The fortunate Kshatriyas obtain a battle such as this. [It/ That which] happened by chance [that] the gate to heaven [was] opened, O Partha. '
  • In contrast, [MM2015] [1] treats the entire stanza as a single clause. However, [MM2015] does not clearly show the internal structure of the clause, especially with respect to the arguments of the two passive past particples. It appears, from the English translation shown below the analysis, that both the participles have as their Subject 'ACC-S:yuddham:battle'. However, this would imply that the term 'svargadvAram: gate to heaven' must be a complement of the participle 'apAvRutam:[that has] opened' (i.e. the participle 'apAvRutam' cannot be 'karmaNNi', as shown in the analysis by [MM2015]). Note the distance between the participle 'upapannam' and its Subject 'yuddham' in this analysis.
  • A simple reading of [MM2015] is: 'And, O Partha, the fortunate Kshatriyas obtain a battle such as this [the battle that has] arrived by chance, [and the battle that is] an opened gate to heaven. '.
  • [KAL2015] [2] treats the participle terms as ACC-S, and the internal structure assumed is not clear.
  • The parser may be justified in creating two clauses, with one clause being a dependent clause. One could argue that 'yadRuchchhayA' ('by chance') is an adjective that is derived from the relative pronoun prefix ('yad'), making it a pseudo-relative pronoun (i.e. 'which, by chance') in a dependent clause. The reader should note that there are other parallels, such as the word 'yadvat: in which way' (it has a correlate 'tadvat: in that way'), which are usually treated as dependent clauses (for e.g., 'yadvat' with its correlative 'tadvat'). However, we have treated the creation of two clauses by the parser as a defect.
