COMMENTS:

  • The gerund 'bhUtvA: having been' shown in clause A.2 highlights an issue that arises when gerunds are shown as independent clauses (as the parser does). In this stanza, the gerund has no direct object. [MM2015] and other commentators treat this gerund term as an indeclinable adjunct of the passive past participle 'NOM-S:bahumataHa: [one who is] highly esteemed'. This treatment results in the reading 'you [who] having been highly esteemed of whom will become disrespected'. However, the internal syntactic structure of this interpretation is unclear given the unambiguous Case of several terms involved (i.e. 'NOM-S:tvam:you' and 'NOM-S:bahumataHa:[one who is] highly esteemed').
